Join us this Sunday! We want to personally welcome you, so please let us know you’re coming by completing the I’m New contact form.
*This is great opportunity to fellowship after or before service. Join us for food, fun, and fellowship in the Fellowship Hall located behind the Worship Center.
What Do We Believe?
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (see Who Is Jesus?). But more than that, we believe that He wants to be involved in every human life to give real life. We believe that every human being is created in the image of God but that all of us have a way of messing up that image. God’s image in us can only be restored by Jesus Christ. He died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins and to restore our relationship with God. Jesus rose from the dead so we could become like Him and enjoy God’s presence forever.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the gap between Jesus and human beings is pretty big. He lived for others; we often live for ourselves. He forgave the unforgivable; we have a hard time forgiving people who offend us. The process of changing from what we are to becoming more like Jesus is called transformation or discipleship (from the word meaning to follow). Our goal at Aloma UMC is to help people become fully devoted followers of Christ. We won’t always get things perfectly right but we want people to get their hearts set on becoming like Jesus with His help. Three words are vital to this process.
We believe that people become more like Jesus when they have help and give help to others. The whole process begins when people help each other get connected with Jesus through making a commitment to Him. Some churches call this being “born again” or “getting saved.” Whatever it is called, it involves overcoming the distance that exists between people and God because of sin. Connecting with others often gives us the courage and direction to connect with God.
Just as a baby is born and then grows up, so a person needs to grow up after being “born again.” Often our hang-ups and habits follow us into our new life in Christ. Through Bible reading, prayer, and hanging out with others, we learn how to let Jesus shape us to be more like Him.
Jesus said of Himself that he came “not to be served, but to serve.” If we want to be like Him, serving our world is not optional. Most people have an innate desire to help others. However, serving goes one step farther, teaching us to sacrifice ourselves for others and helping them find what they really need. Sometimes serving will involve handing out food or providing medical care, and sometimes it will involve telling people about Jesus. Just as Jesus gave Himself to change the world, we are called to do the same.
Jesus is more than just a word used in frustration or a great moral teacher. He is the son of God. We say is because He is still alive. He walked the earth as a man 2000 years ago and turned His world upside down.
He was crucified for His efforts, but was raised from the dead three days later. When He rose from the dead, He stayed alive, and is still working in people’s lives to turn them into all that God intended them to be. He wants to get into your life as well and give you new life here on earth, and after you die, in heaven.
